• (religion) act which, whether done by a priest or layperson, will be condemned by the world, because it is wrong or inappropriate by nature, such as murder, theft, etc; as opposed to , act which, if done by a priest, will be condemned because it violates a religious rule, but, if done by a layperson, may not be considered wrong or appropriate, such as eating at a wrong time.
