Borrowed from Hebrew (modern) שַׁבָּת (Sabbath, Shabbat, sabbath, Saturday, weekly day of rest) derived from Proto-Semitic *ṯabat- (or staying, fixed, be still) derived from Akkadian 𒋛𒁍𒌅 (seventh day of the month), 𒌓𒌋𒐊𒄰 (a day of the cessation, the new and full moon, two-week duration).
